The movie world is abuzz with news that Michael Douglas and Matt Damon are to star in a new biopic based on the life of flamboyant gay entertainer Liberace.

The outrageously camp piano playing showman, best known for his extravagant costumes and Las Vegas spectaculars, was once the world’s highest paid musical performer. He died of an AIDS related illness in 1987. (more…)

Invictus is a 2009 biographical drama film based on Nelson Mandela’s life during the 1995 Rugby World Cup in South Africa. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the film stars Morgan Freeman as South African President Mandela, and Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar, the South African team captain. The story is based on the John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation. Invictus was released in the United States on December 11, 2009.

After decades in a Robben Island prison, Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) is released in 1990 and works immediately to bring about the end of apartheid and the initiation of full democratic elections where the black majority population can vote. Mandela wins the race for President of South Africa and takes office in 1994. His immediate challenge is “balancing black aspirations with white fears.” The country’s still-present racial tensions are shown, in part, through Mandela’s security team, which comprises both new black and old white officials, with the groups immediately hostile to one another despite sharing the same job and goal. At age 22, young Darwin found an opportunity to sail around the world on board the surveying vessel, the HMS Beagle, as a companion to captain Robert Fitzroy, leaving temporarily aside his education at Christ College, Cambridge.

A journey initially estimated by Fitzroy to last three years, was on its fourth year and had one more to go before the HMS Beagle would return to England in 1836. Five years that would reshape Darwin’s way of understanding natural history, and produce his masterpiece years later, which turned into one of the most revolutionary ideas of human thinking. (more…)

New Moon just made a huge hit where, at present, it holds a total gross of 0 Million worldwide. Eclipse has just wrapped it up and fans have already made their won teasers to the said Twilight Saga (can’t wait for the real thing though). But as the two Twilight installments are up, not to mention with the third (Eclipse) coming June 30th of next year, Breaking Dawn has the Twi-hard fans on the buzz. (more…)

I have to admit after watching the first Twilight I didn’t really understand what all of the buzz was about.  I chalked this up to the fact that I’m not a teenager and I also don’t have a vagina (although sometimes I wish I did).  Don’t get me wrong, by no means did I think Twilight was bad; it was merely okay.  I’ve seen better, I’ve seen worse.  New Moon is a marked improvement upon the first film and I actually found myself getting wrapped up in this modern day retelling of Romeo and Juliet with a supernatural twist.  New Moon still isn’t the best movie I’ve ever seen, but if I were a fourteen year old girl, I’m sure it would be. The alchemical period corresponds to the span of human history that preceded the era in which fundamental understanding in the chemical sciences began to be acquired by humankind. Most scholars believe that alchemy had its roots in ancient Egypt. China has also emerged as a possible source of alchemical thought. Thus, alchemy was the practice of chemistry such as it existed over the approximately twenty-five centuries before the time of Robert Boyle (1627–1697) and Antoine Lavoisier (1743–1784), when chemistry began to develop into the science we know today. Alchemy was an early precursor to science and included many of the chemistry-related processes that have become known as the chemical arts—the working of metals and alloys, glassmaking and glass coloring, and the preparation and use of pigments, dyes, and therapeutic agents. Superwoman is a soul–R&B song written by American singer-songwriter Alicia Keys, Linda Perry, and Steve Mostyn for Keys’ third studio album, As I Am. The track will be released as the fourth and final single from the album. The song debuted in the US on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Chart week of August 14 at #55 and currently sits at #27. Superwoman is expected to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart next week. The song has already peaked on Japanese and Spanish charts. (more…)
