Every year the School Leonardo da Vinci in Florence, leader in the field of Italian language teaching for foreigners, offers a rich programme full of courses of any kind, which introduce students in a complete study of Italian culture and language.

But for the year 2009, our school has enriched its calendar with some new special courses. The brand new courses of this year are “La Dolce Vita” and “Professional Italian Cooking Courses”, two young courses thought for young students who come from all over the world, whose desire is to learn Italian language and culture in a special way.

“La Dolce Vita” is a really particular course dedicated to the students of all ages, whose desire is to learn Italian language allowing themselves at the same time a relaxing holiday entirely dedicated to culture. The purpose of this course is to encourage and stimulate the speaking skills in Italian language of students, so that they soon will be able to converse with people without difficulty, through a long series of cultural activities and guided tours. The course lasts one week and you will have the chance to choose to attend it in the cities of Florence, Milan, Rome or Siena. You will be spoilt for choice!

“Professional Italian Cooking Courses” on the other hand, is a very particular course which introduces students in the study of Italian language, making use of one of the most famous aspects of our culture: the cuisine. These courses start every two weeks in the schools of Florence and Rome, and consist of three levels, from the simplest one (Level I), which lasts 4 weeks, to the intermediate level II, which lasts 8 weeks, to the last one, the professional level (level III) which has a duration of 12 weeks and offers 100 hours of Italian language lessons and 84 lessons of professional cuisine.

But the originality and continuous changes and updating of School Leonardo da Vinci don’t stop here! Yes, because for the year 2009 some courses have been added in other venues. For example the “Small Group Intensive Italian Language Course” and the “Course for Italian-language Teachers” now are available also in the school of Milan, whereas the special “Preparatory Course for Fashion and Design Academies” from next year will be accessible also in Florence.

Serendipity – 2 Stars (Average)

“Serendipity” begs the question: “Can you trust pure fate or destiny to bring two people together when the odds of doing so are impossible?”

A common definition of fate is “the development of events outside a person’s control”, and a common definition of destiny is “the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future”. Given this perspective, the odds are long and not good. Which is why we root for the two people in this movie to ultimately beat the odds.

We are captivated by magic, especially when it comes to relationships, love and marriage. We want to believe the best, and ignore the worst that can happen. The risk takers among us will bet the course of our life on making an unpopular decision that lacks common sense and sensibility.

Such is the mindset of Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) when she momentarily meets Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) in Bloomingdale’s while buying a pair of gloves. Sara is buying them for her boyfriend, and Jonathan is buying them for his girlfriend.

They both hook up for a few hours despite being committed to another, and Jonathan almost immediately decides he wants to see more of Sara. Sara, a believer in fate, is finally coaxed into giving Jonathan her phone number, but the wind blows the slip of paper away. Sara is all about reading signals, and this is the first of many.

She eventually tells Jonathan her first name, but writes her full name and phone number in a book—Love in the Time of Cholera—and then they misconnect, and should Jonathan ever want to find her again, he must find that exact book, wherever it may be. Jonathan stays in New York, but Sara eventually ends up in San Francisco.

Ten years pass and both of them are engaged and soon to be married to someone else. Jonathan has searched for the book but never found it, and Sara wonders if her chosen one, Lars Hammond (John Corbett), is really the right choice.

They begin to search for each other as time nears for Jonathan to walk down the aisle with Halley Buchanan (Bridget Moynahan). Jonathan enlists the aid of his best friend Dean Kansky (Jeremy Piven), and Sara seeks help from her friend Eve (Molly Shannon). Without realizing it, they nearly cross paths several times before we find out what fate and destiny have in store for the wannabe couple.

The plot in this film is fine; the script by Marc Klein could be better. There are enough problems with sound and situations in this movie that make it difficult to hear the lines and, if you did, they are not that great. The direction by Peter Chelson is somewhat better.

While the genuineness of John Cusack in his role is believable, and there are some really great shots of Kate Beckinsale looking mighty fine, there really is no great acting going on. Despite the plot, Serendipity gets virtually zip notice for acting, directing or scriptwriting at awards time.

It is the idea of the movie—that we want to believe in the magic of these two souls finding each other in the end—that draws us in and makes it work. On this score, I am just as big a sucker as the next guy.

I believe in magic, and I am a risk taker. My first great love was in high school; I was absolutely smitten with this girl. I went off to college and she found someone else during her senior year in high school.

When we both were ready to graduate from college and she was getting married, I contacted her and questioned whether she had made the right choice for marriage. I proposed we run away together; she refused, and I refused to believe she had any more feelings for her proposed marriage partner than she did for me. I knew she was really marrying for security, not passion.

She gave me a book—The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran—and wrote this inside for me to ponder: “Time and Memories are eternal, Memories come from Time . . . , But Time from Memories, never.” To this day I do not know if the saying came from Gibran’s book, or if she made it up.

Trust me when I say that I have never been a fan of Kahlil Gibran, not 43 years ago and not today. I can confirm with absolutely certainty, however, one thing that Gibran did say in his book—”love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation.”

Today I am much older and much wiser, and I still believe in magic. Here is the kind of magic I believe in: “At any given place on any given day at any given time, something magical can happen”. It happened to me once, and it could happen to me again.

Leonardo’s Vitruvian Man teaches us how to achieve some of Leonardo’s greatest qualities. It teaches us how to balance our lives, and thereby, become more whole human beings.

Leonardo embodied the qualities of indivisible wholeness suggested by his Vitruvian Man. He was the consummate scientist (Da Vinci Man in the square) and artist (Da Vinci Man in the circle) of his time.

Leonardo said it best: “The outstretched arms and legs of a man form a square and a circle: the square symbolizes the solid physical world and the circle the spiritual and eternal. Man bridges the gap between these two worlds.”

Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man (the Da Vinci Man with four arms and four legs in a square and circle) is the most popular secular symbol in the world. My 10 years of research suggests that the Vitruvian Man is a universal symbol for great love, relationships, success, health and the 21st century paradigm of indivisible wholeness, the paradigm for world peace. A New Renaissance!

The Da Vinci Man is a universal translator between scientific models (represented by the Da Vinci Man in the square) and religious symbols (represented by the Da Vinci Man in the circle). Therefore, the Vitruvian Man (Da Vinci Man) is a bridge between science and religion. There are amazing similarities between the sacred geometry of the Da Vinci Man, Yin-Yang, Star of David, Tree of Life, Christian Cross, Angels and Kabbalah.

Leonardo’s contributions were vast and were the most of any person of his era. He has been criticized for not completing things. This is like criticizing Columbus for not discovering India. Besides, Leonardo saw his role as an idea man. His job was to set things in motion and let others finish the work.

Many believe that the Vitruvian Man (as well as Mona Lisa) is a self-portrait of Leonardo. Unfortunately, we only have 5,000 pages of Leonardo’s work. About half has been lost. If we had the rest of his work, his stature as the greatest artist (like the Da Vinci Man in the circle) and scientist of his age (like the Da Vinci Man in the square) would only be enhanced.

The King of France believed that Leonardo was the most knowledgeable person in the world in the areas of philosophy, art, architecture and hydraulics (used in building canals). Leonardo’s work on canals was adopted and used throughout France. He was credited with the interlocking designs used for building the Panama Canal.

Leonardo was born before Copernicus, yet he came to the conclusion that the earth moved around the sun. Leonardo was born one hundred years before Galileo, yet he came to the conclusion that objects with different mass fell at the same speed. Leonardo also started grinding lenses to make the first telescope, something that Galileo was given credit for. Leonardo’s drawings and understanding of light reflected from the moon was considered to be very advanced astronomy for his time.

Leonardo discovered that the heart could be affected by blockages of the arteries. He discovered arteriosclerosis, which was credited to anatomists at least 200 years after Leonardo. Leonardo discovered that objects did not move unless acted upon. It was referred to as Leonardo’s Law before Newton was given credit for this observation two hundred years later.

NASA attributes the modern age of flight with Leonardo’s invention of the first glider. The year 2006 is the 500th anniversary of the year of flight, noted from the time Leonardo drew illustrations of the flight of birds. His drawings are considered the most accurate renditions of birds in flight until the development of the camera three hundred years later. Incidentally, Leonardo is also credited with early contributions to the development of the camera. He was the first to note how the lens of the eye inverted the images it saw.

Leonardo was a humanitarian and a lover of animals. He was vegetarian and would purchase birds in the market only to release them into the air. If one were to visit a website of Leonardo’s machines, they would see over fifty models of Leonardo’s inventions. It blew my mind how one person could accomplish so much. Leonardo’s drawings are so popular that just a few featured in the Metropolitan Museum of Art drew the largest audience for an exhibit ever attended there.

Leonardo’s realism influenced the artists of his time and those five hundred years later. His Mona Lisa so moved Raphael, he adopted Leonardo’s style. Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, famous for the depiction of God touching Adam’s finger, shows influences from Leonardo. Bramante built parts of the church in Milan where Leonardo was illustrating the Last Supper and was so taken by Leonardo that he wrote poems about him.

This is the 500th anniversary of Saint Peter’s Basilica. Bramante started the design of Saint Peter’s Basilica, the largest architectural endeavor of the 16th century. His work was continued by Raphael and the dome was constructed by Michelangelo. All were highly influenced by Leonardo.

The geometry of the Da Vinci Person, representing the spiritual man, finds its way into the architecture of Saint Peter’s. The altar square is situated below the domed (circled) basilica. Whenever we see depictions of angels that are most true to life, we see them on the domes of churches, an entry into heaven on earth.

Bernini, one of the greatest artists of the Baroque period, designed the square around St Peter’s. It is influenced by the sacred geometry of the Da Vinci Person. Some art historians credit the early beginning of the Baroque period to Da Vinci’s highly emotional rendition of the Battle of Alighieri in the hall where the council of Florence met.

Leonardo is considered to be among the first epidemiologists. He realized that poor people died of the plaque because of the water conditions and designed the first city that would help to eliminate the cause of some diseases.

The statistics can lie of course, and main source of error is hair color as many women of course color their hair, and therefore hide their natural color. Another source of error could be the breast size as some have natural, and others have transplants in them to make them bigger.

Of the list seen below we can see that around 64 percent of the women have brown eyes as the rest 36% has blue eyes. Any discoloring in shades of blue, grey, black, dark brown has not been taken into account.

38 percent of the women have blond or brown hair, and the rest 24 percent has black hair.br>

What is interesting is to see the combination of hair and eyes as well. We have found out that around 29 percent has brown hair and brown eyes. 24 percent has black hair combined with brown eyes. 21 percent has blond hair and blue eyes and 11 percent has blond hair with brown eyes. The rest of combinations states 9 percent brown hair with blue eyes and 6% with blond hair and blue eyes and finally 4 percent with black hair and blue eyes.

You can yourself do the statistics on the breast size and whether there is a combination of hair color, breast size or eye color and breast size that strikes out.

The Professional (1994)- Natalie made her acting debut in this gritty thriller from director Luc Besson. Costarring with French actor Jean Reno, Natalie played the often heartbreaking role of Mathilda, a young girl whose parents are brutally murdered and who is then taken under the wing of her neighbor, played by Reno. The catch? Her neighbor is a professional assassin who reluctantly teaches Mathilda his trade.

Heat (1995)- Costarring with Hollywood heavyweights Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Natalie plays the troubled daughter of a Los Angeles crime detective on the path of an expert thief. The film takes a dark look at corruption and crime in Los Angeles, and offers some of the most jaw-dropping chase scenes ever seen on film. Watch it in HD to get the full effect.

Everyone Says I Love You (1996)- This musical comedy from legendary director Woody Allen was a stark turn for Natalie. While most of her previous work was undeniable dark and serious, this playful film with an all star cast takes place on New York’s Upper East Side in the 1930’s. It is a throwback to the days when musicals were plentiful in the movie theaters, and will have you humming a tine around your living room.

Beautiful Girls (1996)- In this romantic drama from director Tod Demme, Natalie plays the precocious Marty, a preteen that catches the eye of Willie Conway, played by Timothy Hutton. Conway and his high school friends, including the former town sports star and the class clown, return to their hometown for their high school reunion. The film is a touching, and often funny look at the difficulties of modern relationships, and the pain that often surfaces when you go home again.

Anywhere But Here (1999)- This story about a dysfunctional Midwestern mother who desperately wants her beautiful young daughter to become a movie star, was a heartbreaking look at a relationship gone horribly wrong. Natalie starred opposite the incomparable Susan Sarandon, as Ann August, a girl who dreamt of the Ivy League, not the big screen. She ultimately learns to walk away from the controlling grasp of her unstable mother and follow her own dreams.

Garden State (2004)- Scrubs star Zach Braff blew audiences away with this unassuming film about a young man who returns to his hometown for his mother’s funeral, and is forced to face the family that he has been estranged from. Natalie stars as his love interest named Sam, a fun-loving and quirky girl who ultimately brings him out of the darkness.
