Referee’s fault in the World Cup 2010 like Robert Rosetti, the World Cup referee who wrongly awarded a goal to Argentina in its second-round wins against Mexico. There are two types of bad calls – poorly made referee judgments on fouls, and mistakes due to bad “positioning.” Other types of calls – such as determining if a player is offsides or deciding if the ball has crossed the goal line – are less subjective. These calls do, however, require keen vision by the referees as well as a good line of sight. After two high profile blunders in one week, there are renewed calls for technology assistance.
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has already said goal-line technology, talk of which was shelved at an International FA Board meeting in March, will be back on the agenda at Fifa meetings later in the year.
And Valcke said: “Goal-line technology is something you can use because it gives definitely the chance for the referee to understand the ball is in when he cannot always see it, as we have seen during this World Cup. That’s an alternative we can work on for the future.”
